the instructions the computer follows to perform it's tasks. It can be
delivered on diskette, CD-ROM, tape, or by download. Because of the
close relationship between hardware and software you may believe you have a
hardware problem that is in fact a software issue.

Operating System
The most critical software installed on your computer is the operating
system. It is the basic software program that interacts with your
computer hardware and runs the other application software that performs the
functions you really want for business, entertainment, or communication.
"Office Suite"
The most common productivity applications are often bundled into a package
referred to as an "office suite." The applications included are often
Word Processor, Spreadsheet, Graphic Presentation, Database, and a variety of
others. These are large, complex software packages that can often
malfunction by mistakes in configuration or become damaged by the loss or
corruption of their program files.
Internet
Software that deals with the internet, web browsers and email programs, run
the most risk of some sort of malicious damage. There is the virus
threat whose main purpose is to inflict some sort of damage to the victims
computer and the spyware threat in which the purpose is to steal sensitive
information from the victim or use the victim's computer to relay spam email
messages.
Beyond
Many software problems can be solved by simply reinstalling the software.
This holds true for operating system software as well. Special care must
always be taken not to delete or overwrite important information when
reinstalling. The first step in trying to repair a software problem is
to make a comprehensive backup. In order to do this you must know where
the critical data is and how to save it. It can be a tedious process and
very frustrating if you are not familiar with the inner workings of your
computer. When you've done your best and it still isn't working, pack it up
and bring it in and let Computer Headquarters
fix it for you.
